La Colline du Colombier and Les Cadoles, architectural jewels surrounded by nature in Iguerande, southern Burgundy
In the hills above Iguerande, a Brionnais village at the southernmost point of the Saône-et-Loire district, Marie-Pierre and Michel Troisgros have restored an ancient farm surrounded by lush pasture.
They decided to work with architect Patrick Bouchain, using natural materials, “to help save a culture, an architecture, and a landscape.” La Colline du Colombier includes an inn, Le Grand Couvert; a country house and tower transformed into holiday apartments, La Longère and La Tour; and three cadoles, or cottages, in the field nearby.
In Burgundy, a cadole is a stone hut that used to serve as a shelter for farmers. These very modern versions are vacation cottages for two on stilts, made out of wood, steel, and canvas. The cadole’s architecture merges into the landscape, its gentle curves blending into the side of the hill. Each offers a superb panorama of the surrounding pastures. Sustainable materials like sheep’s wool, wool felt, and hemp were used during construction; respect for the environment was built into each cadole. The interior décor, contemporary and comfortable, also honors the natural setting and ecology.
