Initials BB: the Brigitte Bardot Exhibit at Saint-Tropez
A major exhibit on a glamorous icon of French cinema: Brigitte Bardot.
The mythic initials “BB” stand for a child-woman who brilliantly incarnated all things feminine and became the symbol of the femme fatale. In the unforgettable 1956 film "And God Created Woman" her fresh style and her extraordinary freedom not only conquered the lovesick character played by Jean-Louis Trintignant, but also opened a passage towards women’s liberation. The film was an enormous success overseas and made BB into an international star.
In 1969, she lent her body to the sculptor Aslan as a model for the bust of Marianne (the symbol of France), became the muse of Serge Gainsbourg (who wrote a song called “Initials BB” for her), shot movies with the biggest film stars, and made waves with a combination of natural simplicity and torrid sex appeal.
One November 6, 1973, BB suddenly ended her international acting career and decided to dedicate her life to saving animals—a cause that she still fervently supports today. The exhibit consecrated to her in the town of Boulogne Billancourt was way of rediscovering the era and its context, as well as the life, times and passionate personality of BB. It is clear that she is still is committed to the choices she has made: all visitors to this exhibit are allowed to bring their dog, and the museum has even set up a “doggy-bar” for their enjoyment.
For those who missed it in Boulogne Billancourt, the dream—and the exhibit—live on in Saint-Tropez on Place des Lices from June 23 to October 31, 2010.
The famous Imagerie d’Epinal, known for its idealized images of bygone France, has created a special print featuring BB in all her iconic—and idealized—glory.
