Sturtevant at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Lights through April 25, 2010
On a Sunday morning, you hear English and Japanese on the métro, especially when you are getting off at the Iéna station in Paris and going to the Museum of Modern Art to see Sturtevant’s performance.
An American icon of the 1960s, Sturtevant was close to Andy Warhol and the Pop Art movement, a major inspiration for contemporary art.
The artist having made Paris her home for many years, her work was shown at the Museum of Modern Art of Paris through April 25, 2010 in an exhibit entitled “The Razzle Dazzle of Thinking,” which gives you an idea of the content.
The work is strong, insane, and uncompromising.
A video loop shows a dog running on a 15-meter-long wall to illustrate endless infinity. Naked bodies and Chinese shadows descend an imaginary staircase, alternating with quick circles. Then, the House of Horrors—an installation that includes a phantom fun-fair train and a series of kitchy symbolic tableaux finishing with a skeleton.

After this intense experience, I recommend taking a break at the Café de l’Homme, a few hundred meters away at the Palais de Chaillot, where the huge bay windows look down on Trocadéro. Delicious meals and excellent service, with an amazing view of the Eiffel Tower.
